Overactive Thyroid and Iodine Supplements: Take Care
The NIH lists iodine-induced overactive thyroid among the effects of high intake. It is more likely in people with thyroid nodules or past thyroid disease, and in older adults. Seaweed drops add iodine from several sources, so ask a doctor and watch for a racing heart, tremor and weight loss.

The basics01
What is an overactive thyroid?
Hyperthyroidism means the thyroid makes too much hormone. The body's engine runs too fast, and the person may feel hot, shaky, anxious and unable to rest.
Common causes are Graves disease and nodules that make hormone on their own. A third, less known cause is extra iodine given to a gland that cannot turn it down.
The NIH lists iodine-induced hyperthyroidism and thyroiditis among the harms of high intake (NIH ODS, Iodine).
The evidence02
What does it feel like?
| Area | Signs |
|---|---|
| Heart | Racing or irregular beat, pounding in the chest |
| Nerves and mood | Tremor, anxiety, irritability, trouble sleeping |
| Body | Weight loss despite eating, heat intolerance, sweating |
| Bowels | Frequent loose stools |
| Neck | Swelling or a lump |
Many of these overlap with anxiety and ageing, which is why a blood test matters more than a guess.
The numbers03
Who is more likely to be affected?
People with nodules, past thyroid disease or a history of low iodine intake are more likely to react to extra iodine. Older adults are at greater risk, as the American Thyroid Association notes (ATA, Excess iodine).
The effect can arrive weeks or months after a rise in iodine. A man who starts the drops, feels fine for six weeks and then notices a racing heart may not link the two. That delay is why a log with start dates is useful.
The catch04
Why do seaweed drops matter here?
Seaweeds are the richest food source of iodine, ranging from 16 to 2,984 micrograms per gram (NIH ODS, Iodine). A formula with four seaweeds and iodine itself can supply a lot in a small volume, and the bottle prints no figure.
The ATA warns that many kelp and iodine supplements exceed the upper limit by up to several thousand times, and advises against ones giving over 500 micrograms (ATA, Excess iodine). We do not claim Prostadine does so. We say nobody can check.
Safety05
What should you do?
Ask a doctor first
Especially with nodules, a goiter, past thyroid illness or heart rhythm problems.
Get a baseline TSH
It costs little and gives you a reference.
Watch the signs
Note your resting pulse, sleep, weight and mood each week.
Stop and call if they appear
A cluster of signs is a reason to stop and retest.
Seek urgent care. Do not wait for a thyroid test.
What to do06
How is it diagnosed and treated?
A doctor starts with the story and an exam, then orders blood tests: a low TSH with raised thyroid hormones points to an overactive gland. Further tests, such as an uptake scan or antibodies, find the cause. Treatment depends on that cause and may include tablets that block hormone production, a beta blocker for symptoms, radioactive iodine or surgery.
Iodine-induced overactivity often settles once the extra iodine is removed, but it can take weeks, and some people need treatment while it does. That is another reason to act at the first signs and not wait to see if they pass.
Tell the doctor about every supplement. A list of seaweed, kelp and iodine products is a vital clue that is easy to miss when it is not asked about.
On the label07
What about medicines for the heart or thyroid?
Beta blockers and antithyroid drugs may be part of treatment, and iodine can interact with antithyroid drugs (NIH ODS, Iodine). A person already on these should not add an iodine-rich product without a doctor's agreement.
Do not stop a heart or thyroid medicine because of anything on a web page. Your prescriber manages that.
In practice08
How to keep intake in check
Count what you eat first. Our iodine page has a ceiling calculator that runs in your browser. If you eat seaweed often, or use iodised salt heavily, the headroom for a supplement is smaller than it looks.
FAQ09
Prostadine questions people ask
Can iodine supplements cause hyperthyroidism?
Yes, in some people. The NIH lists iodine-induced overactive thyroid and thyroid inflammation among the effects of high intake. Nodules and older age raise the risk.
How soon after starting do signs appear?
It varies. Signs can arrive weeks or months after a rise in iodine. Keep a log with start dates so you can link a change with the product.
What are the first signs of an overactive thyroid?
A racing heart, tremor, sweating, anxiety, weight loss and loose stools. A blood test confirms it, since several signs overlap with stress and ageing.
Should I stop seaweed in my diet?
Not necessarily, but count it. Seaweed is the richest food source of iodine, so reduce it while you take any iodine-rich supplement, and tell your doctor.
