How it works

How Does Prostadine Work? The Idea Behind the Formula

Quick answer

Prostadine is made to support the prostate and urinary system with nine natural ingredients.

The brand links this to a mineral build-up from hard water. Some ingredients have known roles, such as iodine for the thyroid.

The short answer01

What “how it works” can honestly mean for a supplement

For a medicine, “how it works” has a clear answer: a drug binds a target, and trials show the effect. For Prostadine the honest answer has two parts, what the brand says and what has been measured, and they do not match.

The brand's info page describes a three-step story. A cold drink or hard water is said to start a mineral build-up. The build-up is said to affect the prostate and urinary system. Nine natural ingredients are then said to support repair, flow and bladder function. We could not find a published study of this product, so none of the three steps has been tested on the bottle itself.

What can be done is to take each ingredient on its own and ask what published research says. It will not tell you the drops work, and it will not tell you they do not. It will tell you which parts of the story have support and which parts are only a story.

The claimed chain02

The three steps the info page describes

  1. Step one: a “root cause”

The page headline asks whether a cold drink might trigger your prostate, and says scientists found the real root cause of prostate problems, naming hard water minerals. It names no study. See the hard-water page for what the USGS and NIDDK say.

  2. Step two: build-up affects the prostate

No imaging, urine or blood test is offered to show build-up in a man's prostate. The NIDDK says the cause of an enlarged prostate is not fully known, with age and hormone changes suspected (NIDDK, Enlarged Prostate (BPH)).

  3. Step three: nine ingredients “support” repair, flow and the bladder

Each ingredient gets two short benefit lines. The benefits page sets every line next to the research that exists.

What is known03

What research does show, by ingredient group

Grouping the nine lines by what they are is the clearest way to see what each could plausibly do.

Ingredient groups on the info page and the strongest published finding for each. Studied amounts are not the product's amounts, which are unprinted.
GroupLinesBest-supported roleWhat was found for the prostate
SeaweedsNori, wakame, kelp, bladderwrackDietary iodine, needed for thyroid hormone (NIH ODS, Iodine)No human trial for prostate or bladder use found; MSK says bladderwrack's benefit claims are unconfirmed (MSK, Bladder wrack)
Saw palmettoSaw palmettoSold for urinary symptoms of an enlarged prostateCochrane 2023: little or no benefit in 27 trials (Cochrane review, saw palmetto 2023); NCCIH: probably not helpful (NCCIH, Saw Palmetto)
Fruit and resinPomegranate, shilajitPolyphenols; a traditional mineral resinMixed PSA findings for pomegranate juice (MSK, Pomegranate); one small testosterone trial for shilajit (Pandit et al., Andrologia 2016)
LeafNeemTraditional Ayurvedic leafMSK: studies on safety and effectiveness are lacking (MSK, Neem)
MineralIodineEssential nutrient: RDA 150 mcg a day (NIH ODS, Iodine)No prostate trial found; excess can disturb the thyroid (ATA, Excess iodine)

The pattern is clear. The only ingredient with an established job is iodine, and its job is the thyroid. The only ingredient with large trials for the prostate is saw palmetto, and those trials were mostly negative. The rest have little or no human evidence for the claims made.

The headline herb04

Saw palmetto: the one with real trials

If one ingredient is the reason a man picks a prostate supplement, it is usually saw palmetto. Researchers have tested it more than the other eight combined. A 2006 trial in 225 men aged 50 or older gave 320 mg a day for a year and found no difference from placebo on the AUA Symptom Index (Bent et al., NEJM 2006). A later trial raised the dose to three times that and also found no improvement in symptoms (Bent et al., NEJM 2006).

The 2023 Cochrane review pooled 27 randomized trials with 4,656 men and found little to no benefit for urinary symptoms (Cochrane review, saw palmetto 2023). Side effects matched placebo, which is reassuring for safety and unhelpful for the sales claim.

A fair reading is that saw palmetto is a low-risk herb that most trials found no better than a dummy pill. In this product we do not know how much is in the bottle, so even that modest research cannot be applied. See the saw palmetto page for the details and the trial doses.

Why the dose matters

The trials used about 320 mg a day of a standardised berry extract. Whether a 2 mL serving of this formula carries anything near that amount is exactly what a printed panel would show. Without one, nobody outside the maker can say.

The part with a number05

Iodine: the mechanism we can describe

Iodine is the best-understood item on the list. The thyroid uses it to make thyroid hormones, which help set the pace of the body's metabolism. Adults need 150 micrograms a day, and the tolerable upper limit is 1,100 micrograms (NIH ODS, Iodine).

Because four of the nine lines are seaweeds and a fifth is iodine itself, the bottle can add iodine from five directions at once. Seaweed iodine ranges from 16 to 2,984 micrograms per gram (NIH ODS, Iodine), and the American Thyroid Association says some kelp and iodine supplements contain up to thousands of times the upper limit (ATA, Excess iodine).

The practical takeaway is not that the drops are dangerous. It is that the only mechanism with firm science behind it is also the one a reader can overshoot, so a thyroid check is the sensible step for anyone with thyroid disease or thyroid medicine.

In practice06

What this means if you are deciding whether to try it

Three things follow, and none requires a medical degree.

  • If your symptoms are new or getting worse, see a doctor first. A urine flow problem can come from an enlarged prostate, an infection, a medicine side effect or something else, and only a clinician can tell which (NIDDK, Enlarged Prostate (BPH)).
  • If you already take a prostate medicine, keep taking it. A supplement does not replace tamsulosin or finasteride (MedlinePlus, Tamsulosin).
  • If you decide to try the drops anyway, treat it as a trial with an end date. The info page offers a 60-day window, and the results timeline suggests checking in around week six.

  1. Serenoa repens for the treatment of lower urinary tract symptoms due to benign prostatic enlargement. Franco JVA, Trivisonno L, Sgarbossa NJ, et al. (Cochrane Database Syst Rev, CD001423), 2023.Published 22 June 2023, searched to September 2022: 27 randomized trials with 4,656 men (19 saw palmetto alone versus placebo, 8 combination herbal products). Saw palmetto alone provides little to no benefit for men with lower urinary tract symptoms from benign prostatic enlargement; adverse events were about the same as placebo. The review is less certain about combination products.
  2. Iodine: Fact Sheet for Health Professionals. NIH Office of Dietary Supplements, 2024.RDA for adults is 150 mcg a day; the tolerable upper intake level is 1,100 mcg a day. Dried nori, 2 tablespoons of flakes (5 g): 116 mcg. Seaweeds range from 16 to 2,984 mcg per gram. High intakes can cause goiter, elevated TSH and hypothyroidism, and iodine-induced hyperthyroidism and thyroiditis. Interactions: antithyroid drugs (additive effect, hypothyroidism), and potassium iodide with ACE inhibitors or potassium-sparing diuretics (hyperkalemia risk).
  3. Hardness of Water. U.S. Geological Survey, Water Science School, 2026.Hardness is mainly dissolved calcium and magnesium. Bands in mg/L as calcium carbonate: 0-60 soft, 61-120 moderately hard, 121-180 hard, above 180 very hard. The USGS describes hardness as 'not a health concern, but it can be a nuisance' (soap scum, scale in pipes). Drinking water can contribute calcium and magnesium to the diet. The USGS maps are not for local decisions; ask your water utility.

FAQ07

Prostadine questions people ask

How does Prostadine work?

The info page says nine natural ingredients support the prostate and urinary system, and links the problem to hard water minerals. No published trial tests the product, so no mechanism is proven. The ingredient with the clearest role is iodine, which the thyroid uses.

Does Prostadine shrink the prostate?

No evidence says it does. Even the best-known ingredient, saw palmetto, showed little or no benefit for urinary symptoms in a 27-trial review (Cochrane review, saw palmetto 2023). Prostate medicines are the products doctors use for an enlarged prostate.

Does the hard-water story hold up?

The USGS describes water hardness as not a health concern, though it can be a nuisance (USGS, Hardness of Water). The NIDDK says researchers have not linked diet or nutrition to causing an enlarged prostate (NIDDK, Enlarged Prostate (BPH)). The info page names no study.

Is there a clinical trial of Prostadine?

We found none. The references on the info page concern single ingredients, not the finished drops, so their results cannot be assumed to carry over to this formula.
