Shilajit in Prostadine: One Small Testosterone Trial and Nothing on the Prostate
Shilajit is the eighth line on the Prostadine info page, with the benefit lines “Strong antioxidant benefits” and “Sleep supporting properties”. The one randomized trial we found tested purified shilajit on testosterone in healthy men, not on the prostate or sleep. The amount in Prostadine is not printed.

What it is01
What shilajit is, and why the photo shows black stones
Shilajit is a sticky, dark, mineral-rich resin that seeps from rocks in mountain regions, most famously the Himalayas. It has a long place in Ayurvedic tradition, where it is described as a general tonic.
The Prostadine info page lists “Shilajit” eighth of nine, with two benefit lines: “Strong antioxidant benefits” and “Sleep supporting properties”. The brand's image for this line shows a stack of smooth black stones and chips. The real material is a resin, so the picture is an illustration, not a photograph of the ingredient in the bottle.
Shilajit is not a plant or a single compound. It is a natural material whose make-up depends on where it was collected and how it was processed, which is why “purified” on a product description is a meaningful word, and why quality matters as much as effect.
| Name on the info page | Shilajit |
|---|---|
| What it is | Black mineral-rich resin from Himalayan rock |
| Place on the info page | 8 of 9 (not a verified weight order) |
| Amount in Prostadine | Not printed in any image we have |
| Amount used in research | One small trial used 250 mg twice a day of purified shilajit for 90 days |
| Strength of evidence | One small trial on testosterone; nothing on the prostate |
| Marketed or traditional use | Ayurvedic tonic |
| Main caution | A natural resin whose quality varies by source; ask for a lab certificate. |
| Info-page benefit lines | “Strong antioxidant benefits” / “Sleep supporting properties” |
The research02
The trial we found, and what it did not test
We found one randomized, placebo-controlled trial of purified shilajit in men. It enrolled healthy men aged 45 to 55, who took 250 mg twice a day (500 mg in total) for 90 days, and the abstract reports roughly a 20 percent rise in total testosterone (Pandit et al., Andrologia 2016).
Three limits apply. The men were healthy volunteers, not men with urinary symptoms. The study looked at testosterone and did not study the prostate or urinary symptoms (Pandit et al., Andrologia 2016). And we could not open the full text, so we rely on the title and summaries of the abstract. That is why the entry is marked as abstract-level in the reference list.
| Info-page line | Studied? | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| “Strong antioxidant benefits” | No human outcome found | An antioxidant in a test tube is not a result in a man; no trial outcome was identified |
| “Sleep supporting properties” | No trial found | The one trial we found measured testosterone, not sleep (Pandit et al., Andrologia 2016) |
| Prostate or urinary effect | No | Not studied in the trial we found (Pandit et al., Andrologia 2016) |
| Testosterone | Yes, healthy men, 500 mg a day for 90 days | About a 20 percent rise reported (Pandit et al., Andrologia 2016) |
The amount problem03
500 mg a day is the benchmark; the bottle's amount is unknown
The trial dose, 500 mg a day of purified shilajit, gives a number to hold up against a label. If a Supplement Facts panel showed shilajit at or near that amount, the product would at least match what was studied. If it shows far less, the trial does not apply.
If the panel shows a proprietary blend, its total gives a ceiling for the eighth line of one eighth of the total (21 CFR 101.36 (eCFR)). That ceiling is under 500 mg unless the blend total exceeds 4,000 mg. The ceiling calculator on the label page shows the arithmetic. Without a panel, nobody can say.
Divide any blend total from a panel by eight. If the result is under 500 mg, the shilajit line cannot match the dose that was tested.

Questions to ask any seller of a natural resin
Because shilajit comes from the ground, a buyer is entitled to ask how it is checked. We cannot cite a source for contaminant rates in shilajit products, so we will not guess at them. The sensible position is to ask for the documents a careful maker would already have.
- Is it purified, and how? A seller should be able to describe the process.
- Has a lab tested the batch for heavy metals? Ask for the certificate of analysis with the lot number.
- Which lab, and on what date? A reference number alone does not show a test; see the batch verification page.
- How much shilajit is in one 2 mL serving, in milligrams?
Honest answers are usually quick. A seller who has the documents can send them the same day, and one who cannot may not have them. If a seller cannot answer, that is information about the seller, not about shilajit. Related checks are on the testing and quality page.
Verdict05
What the evidence supports
What is in its favour
- A traditional tonic with one randomized trial in healthy men (Pandit et al., Andrologia 2016)
- A tested dose to compare against: 500 mg a day
What counts against it
- The trial measured testosterone, not the prostate, antioxidant effects or sleep
- Full text not available to us; abstract-level only
- Amount and purification not printed
Shilajit is an interesting ingredient with a thin evidence base that points at a different question than the one the label raises. Next in the list is the final line, neem. You can also return to the full ingredient overview.
- Clinical evaluation of purified Shilajit on testosterone levels in healthy volunteers. Pandit S, Biswas S, Jana U, et al. (Andrologia 48:570-575), 2016.Found through a web search; the full text could not be opened here, so this entry rests on the title and trade-press summaries of the abstract. A randomized, placebo-controlled trial in healthy men aged 45 to 55 gave 250 mg of purified shilajit twice a day for 90 days (500 mg a day) and reported about a 20% rise in total testosterone. It did not study the prostate or urinary symptoms.
- 21 CFR 101.36 - Nutrition labeling of dietary supplements. U.S. Code of Federal Regulations (eCFR), 2026.Under paragraph (c), a supplement may list a 'Proprietary Blend' with the total weight of the blend and its ingredients listed in descending order of predominance by weight. So a line in place k of n cannot hold more than the blend total divided by k.
FAQ06
Prostadine questions people ask
What is shilajit?
Shilajit is a dark, mineral-rich resin that seeps from mountain rocks, used for centuries in Ayurvedic tradition. It is not a plant. The image on the info page shows black stones as a stand-in.
Does shilajit raise testosterone?
One randomized trial of purified shilajit in healthy men aged 45 to 55 reported about a 20 percent rise in total testosterone with 500 mg a day for 90 days (Pandit et al., Andrologia 2016). It did not study prostate or urinary symptoms.
Does shilajit help sleep?
We found no trial of shilajit for sleep. The info page claim “Sleep supporting properties” has no study behind it that we could verify.
How much shilajit is in Prostadine?
No amount is printed in any image or page we have. The only research dose we found is 500 mg a day of purified shilajit, so a printed panel is needed to compare.
