Kelp in Supplements: Iodine, Risk and What to Ask
Kelp is a brown seaweed and one of the richest iodine sources. The American Thyroid Association says some kelp supplements hold up to thousands of times the upper limit and advises against any supplying over 500 micrograms. Prostadine lists kelp third, with no amount printed.

The basics01
What is kelp?
Kelp is a group of large brown seaweeds that grow in cool coastal water. It is eaten in East Asian cooking, dried into powders and sold as a supplement.
It is the third of nine ingredients on the Prostadine info page. Nori and wakame come before it, and bladderwrack, a related brown seaweed, comes after it.
Kelp is valued for minerals, especially iodine. That is also the issue: the same property that makes it nutritious makes it easy to overdo.
The evidence02
How much iodine can kelp hold?
Seaweeds range from 16 to 2,984 micrograms of iodine per gram, and the top of that range belongs to brown seaweeds such as kelp (NIH ODS, Iodine). A single gram at the high end gives nearly three times the adult upper limit of 1,100 micrograms.
The American Thyroid Association says many iodine, potassium iodide and kelp supplements contain amounts far above the upper limit, by up to several thousand times, and advises against any that provide more than 500 micrograms a day (ATA, Excess iodine).
These are general findings about kelp products, not a test of Prostadine. They explain why the missing figure matters.
The numbers03
What can kelp do to the thyroid?
| Effect | Who is more at risk |
|---|---|
| Goiter (swollen thyroid) | People with existing thyroid disease |
| Raised TSH and underactive thyroid | Older adults; those on antithyroid drugs |
| Overactive thyroid, thyroid inflammation | People with nodules or a history of thyroid illness |
| Concerns in pregnancy and nursing | Mothers and infants |
The effects are listed by the NIH and the ATA (NIH ODS, Iodine)(ATA, Excess iodine). They are not common in healthy adults at normal intakes. They become more likely as intake climbs and as the thyroid is already under strain.
The catch04
Is there evidence kelp helps the prostate?
We found none. No human trial of kelp for prostate or urinary symptoms appears in the sources we hold. The case for it in a prostate formula rests on tradition and on its mineral content, not on a trial.
The only prostate-linked fact we can cite is cautionary: iodine excess can disturb thyroid function, and a thyroid problem can bring tiredness, weight change and sleep trouble that a man might blame on his prostate.
Safety05
What should you ask the seller?
- Which kelp species is used, and where is it harvested?
- How much kelp, in milligrams, is in a 2 mL serving?
- What is the iodine per serving from a lab test?
- Are heavy metals tested, and can I see the result?
Those four answers turn a name on a label into numbers a doctor can read. If any is missing, keep the doubt in mind when you decide.
If you have thyroid disease or take thyroid medicine, speak to your doctor before using any kelp product.
What to do06
How does supplement kelp compare with food?
Kelp in the diet comes in portions you can see, such as a strip in a soup or a spoon of flakes. Supplement kelp comes in a capsule or a dropper, which hides how much seaweed was used. A small bottle can pack a large amount of iodine into a very small volume.
Cooks who use kelp often soak and boil it, which washes out part of the iodine. A supplement skips that step and delivers the whole load. For people who like the taste of the sea, a measured food portion is gentler than a concentrated extract.
If you do want kelp in the diet, weigh the portion and keep it occasional until you know how your thyroid responds. That is the sort of caution the ATA's warning is about.
On the label07
What it means for the Prostadine bottle
It means kelp is one of five iodine sources in the formula, and the dose is unknown. See the kelp and bladderwrack page for the profile, and our iodine and thyroid guide for the ceiling calculator.
If you want a source of iodine, iodised salt and dairy supply it with far less guesswork. A supplement is not the only, or the safest, route.
FAQ08
Prostadine questions people ask
Is kelp safe to take daily?
It depends on the iodine in it. The ATA advises against supplements giving over 500 micrograms of iodine a day, and some kelp products far exceed the upper limit. Check the amount.
Does kelp help an enlarged prostate?
No human trial we hold tests it for that. It is traditional in some cuisines and rich in iodine, but a prostate benefit is unproven.
Can kelp affect thyroid tests?
Yes. Excess iodine can raise TSH and change thyroid results. Tell your doctor about kelp or seaweed supplements before a thyroid blood test.
Is kelp the same as bladderwrack?
No, though both are brown seaweeds. Prostadine lists them as separate ingredients, kelp third and bladderwrack fourth, and both add iodine.
