Pomegranate and PSA: What the Research Says
MSK reports conflicting data on whether pomegranate juice slows PSA rise in men with raised PSA. The only dose it cites is 8 ounces of juice a day. Prostadine lists pomegranate with no amount, so the juice studies cannot be applied to a 2 mL serving.

The basics01
Why is pomegranate linked to the prostate?
Because of a handful of small studies in men with prostate cancer, where researchers watched how fast PSA rose after treatment.
Pomegranate is rich in polyphenols, plant compounds studied for their effects on inflammation. That is a reason researchers looked at it, not a result. A compound that behaves well in a dish does not always do so in a person, and PSA is a blood marker, not a measure of symptoms.
The idea spread because it is easy to retell: a fruit, a number, a hopeful headline. The studies behind it are less tidy.
The evidence02
What does the research say?
Memorial Sloan Kettering reports that data are conflicting on whether pomegranate juice slows the rise of PSA in men with raised PSA. Preliminary human studies suggest a possible benefit for erectile function, and testosterone is not addressed (MSK, Pomegranate).
The only dose cited is 8 ounces of juice a day, used for more than two years in a safety observation. That is roughly 240 mL of juice, many times the volume of the whole Prostadine serving, and the drops list eight other ingredients as well.
The studies concerned men with a cancer history, not men with urinary symptoms from an enlarged prostate. The two groups are different, and a finding in one does not carry across.
The numbers03
Juice study versus the bottle
| Point | Juice research | Prostadine |
|---|---|---|
| Form | Juice, about 8 oz a day | Unknown extract in 2 mL of liquid |
| Group studied | Men with raised PSA | Men with urinary complaints, as marketed |
| Outcome measured | PSA change | Not tested |
| Amount known | Yes | No |
The catch04
What would a PSA change even mean?
A lower PSA is not the same as a healthier prostate. PSA can be raised by an enlarged prostate, an infection or inflammation, and it is lowered by finasteride and dutasteride, which is why doctors adjust the cutoff for men who take them (NCI, PSA test).
So a supplement that nudged PSA down could, in principle, hide a problem. That is another reason to tell the person who orders the test about everything you take. Pomegranate is one small piece of that picture.
Safety05
Is pomegranate safe?
Generally yes, as a food. MSK notes it is well tolerated, with diarrhea at higher doses. There is a case report suggesting an interaction with warfarin, and the juice may raise levels of some drugs, so ask a pharmacist if you take a blood thinner or a statin (MSK, Pomegranate).
Allergy to pomegranate is rare but real. Stop if you notice itching, hives or swelling after a dose.
Check with your pharmacist before taking any concentrated pomegranate product, and mention the warfarin case report.
What to do06
What it means for the drops
It means pomegranate is on the label, and the research on it is mixed and in a different form. The honest summary is that pomegranate is unlikely to harm, and there is no evidence that the amount in 2 mL does anything for urinary symptoms. See the pomegranate page for the details.
If you enjoy the fruit, eating it costs a fraction of the supplement and brings fibre and vitamins. That is a better use of money than a line on a label you cannot read.
FAQ07
Prostadine questions people ask
Does pomegranate lower PSA?
Data conflict. MSK reports mixed findings on whether pomegranate juice slows PSA rise in men with raised PSA, and the studies used about 8 oz of juice a day.
What amount of pomegranate does the bottle contain?
The bottle images print no amount. It is the sixth of nine listed ingredients, so a blend ceiling would be one sixth of the blend, but the real figure is unknown.
Is pomegranate juice good for BPH?
No trial we cite tests it for BPH symptoms. It is a healthy fruit, and a doctor can suggest steps with better evidence for urinary symptoms.
Can pomegranate interact with warfarin?
A case report suggests it may. If you take warfarin or another blood thinner, ask your pharmacist before using a concentrated pomegranate product.
