Shilajit: What the One Small Trial Showed
Shilajit is a tar-like mineral resin from mountain rock, the eighth ingredient on the Prostadine list. One placebo-controlled trial in healthy men aged 45 to 55 gave 500 mg a day for 90 days and reported about a 20 percent rise in total testosterone. It did not study the prostate.

The basics01
What is shilajit?
Shilajit is a sticky, dark resin that seeps from rocks in high mountain ranges, mainly the Himalayas. It forms from decayed plant matter and minerals over very long periods.
It has a long history in Ayurvedic practice, and it is sold today as a purified powder, resin or liquid. It is the eighth of nine ingredients on the Prostadine info page.
Raw shilajit can contain contaminants, which is why sources emphasise purification. The info page makes no statement on purification or testing that we can verify.
The evidence02
What did the trial find?
A randomized, placebo-controlled trial in healthy men aged 45 to 55 gave 250 mg of purified shilajit twice a day, which is 500 mg a day, for 90 days. It reported about a 20 percent rise in total testosterone (Pandit et al., Andrologia 2016).
We found this through a web search, and the full text could not be opened, so our entry rests on the title and summaries of the abstract. That is worth saying plainly.
| Item | Detail |
|---|---|
| Group | Healthy men aged 45 to 55 |
| Dose | 500 mg a day of purified shilajit |
| Length | 90 days |
| Reported result | About 20% rise in total testosterone |
| Prostate or urinary outcome | Not studied |
The numbers03
What are the limits?
It was one small trial, and it measured testosterone, not the prostate or urinary flow. Testosterone is not a symptom, and a higher level does not necessarily mean a better prostate. In some men, hormones that raise prostate growth are the opposite of what is wanted.
The trial used a defined, purified product at a stated dose. Whether the shilajit in Prostadine matches it in form or amount is unknown, since the label prints neither. A result for one product does not carry to another.
The catch04
What forms does shilajit come in?
It is sold as a resin, a powder, a capsule and a liquid. Resin is the traditional form and can vary the most. Purified powders are standardised by the maker to a percentage of fulvic acid, a main active group, though that figure is on the maker's label and checked by the maker.
The trial product was described as purified, with a set dose. A liquid formula such as Prostadine may use a different extract and a smaller or larger amount. Those differences are why one trial cannot be applied loosely to another bottle.
If a seller gives a standardisation figure and a lab report, you can compare. If not, the name on the label is all you have.
Safety05
Is it safe?
The sources we hold do not describe safety in detail. Raw shilajit has been linked to heavy metals and microbes, so purification matters. People with hormone-sensitive conditions, iron overload or gout should ask a clinician, since resin products are rich in minerals and acids.
Testosterone changes can also matter if you are tested for hormones or screened for prostate disease. Tell your doctor you take it.
What to do06
What to ask the seller
- Is the shilajit purified, and by what process?
- How many milligrams are in a 2 mL serving?
- Is each lot tested for lead, arsenic, cadmium and mercury?
- Is there a certificate of analysis I can see?
If you have a hormone-sensitive condition, speak to your doctor before using any product that may affect testosterone.
On the label07
What it means for the drops
It means shilajit is on the label with a single small trial behind it, and that trial did not look at the prostate. The amount in the bottle is not printed. See the shilajit page for more.
The fair summary: it may do something for testosterone at 500 mg, nobody knows if the bottle has that much, and the prostate benefit is unstudied.
FAQ08
Prostadine questions people ask
Did shilajit raise testosterone in the trial?
One placebo-controlled trial of 500 mg a day for 90 days in healthy men aged 45 to 55 reported about a 20 percent rise in total testosterone. It was a single small trial.
Does shilajit help the prostate?
No study we hold tests it for the prostate or urinary symptoms. The one trial measured testosterone only.
Is shilajit safe?
Purified products may be well tolerated, but raw shilajit can carry heavy metals and microbes. Ask the seller for purification details and a lab report.
What amount of shilajit does the bottle contain?
The images print no amount. It is the eighth of nine ingredients, so a blend ceiling would be one eighth of the blend, but the real figure is unknown.
